The main strength of the Garmin Nuvi 42LM is represented by the maps that, apart from being based on detailed City Navigator NT maps of 22 Western European countries, are also upgradeable for free forever, up to 4 times a year. Starting from the specifications, this navigator has a backlit capacitive touchscreen display 4.3-inch diagonal, a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides a maximum of 2 hours.

Just like other models released simultaneously, such as the Garmin nuvi 52LM, is part of the series entry level and, therefore, does not offer many advanced features, but it still represents a good compromise between quality and price, as well as being very easy to use. The Garmin Nuvi 42LM is one of the new satellite navigation systems presented this year by the manufacturer.

I try to determine dates that the products are actually on store shelves or shipping from online retailers rather than using Garmin's product announcement dates. The dates may not be exact, but I think they are in the ball park. I compiled the above list with web research. I thought it would be helpful and interesting to have a comprehensive reference list of the various model groups and their approximate release dates. The model naming, numbering sequence and feature sets are far from logical and can cause confusion in our discussions in the forum. The Drive line of products was announced at CES 2016 in January 2016 as a re-branding of or replacement for the 10+ year old nuvi line. After that first nuvi 300, there was a steady stream of new model anouncements in the nuvi series. Garmin introduced the first nuvi's back in 2005 as a major update in product design from the legacy StreetPilot series. With street prices of about $400 in 1998 money, one might argue the affordability, but it started a long string of increasingly capable navigators with ever decreasing prices. The Garmin StreetPilot, introduced at CES 1998, was the beginning of a long line of "affordable" consumer grade road navigation devices (or PND's). The date represents the month that the device was generally in stock from online vendors or available on store shelves.
